The Selection

Have you ever had to compete for a man? More specifically, have you had to compete with 34 other girls to be queen of a nation? Guess you’re not as cool as America Singer. In the selection series, 35 girls from Illea are chosen to participate in The Selection, a competition where the prince finds his future queen. Due to the responsibilities of being prince, Maxon doesn’t have a lot of time for girls. The Selection is his one shot to find a wife.

America, even with doubts, decided to apply for The Selection after encouragement from her family and her boyfriend, Aspen Ledger. However, throughout the story, America feels The Selection was a bad idea. Her life would be forever changed if she won, and even getting accepted into The Selection would transform her life. The main reason comes from castes. They are classes that people belong to, ranging from one down to eight. The title of your castes determines your profession, income, and overall value. America was a five, but being accepted would make her a three, and if she won, she would be a one. While it seems positive to go up in caste, her life would never be the same. She wouldn’t be able to practice her passion for music and she would have to adjust to the unfamiliar feeling of being in a higher cast. The second issue is Aspen. America is entering a contest to marry Prince Maxon while, at the same time, she is in love with Aspen.

Throughout the book, she and Maxon unlock new mysteries of the creation of Illea, the meaning of love, attacks from rebels, and social hardships. There are conflicts with the other girls, fights with Maxon, issues with the king, and life threatening attacks, which constantly keep the story flowing.

I really enjoyed this book and the following two books in the series. It has numerous plot twists, and even though sometimes it became stressful, it was a really good read and kept me on the edge of my seat. There were times where I didn’t understand how Maxon put up with America’s wild personality, but eventually it made sense.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book and the rest of its series. It really feels like you are truly in the story because of how it can easily manipulate your emotions (in a good way). You should definitely give it a try!
