Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Everyone has a favorite childhood series. Yours might be The Magic Tree House, Geronimo Stilton, Big Nate or even Dog Man. Mine is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is a humorous series based on the difficult life of Greg Heffley through middle school and high school. Back in elementary school, it never failed to make me laugh or entertain me for hours.

I found this series particularly entertaining because it is full of drama. At home, Greg has to deal with his overprotective mother, who some might call a karen, and his dad who is kinda dorky and strict. On top of that, he has two brothers, which is a recipe for disaster. His younger brother, Manny, constantly annoys him because he is, most definitely, the favorite child, while older brother, Rodrick, constantly picks on him and bullies him just because he can.

Meanwhile, at school, his only real friend is Rowley Jefferson, who is loyal, but socially awkward, and immature. His goofy personality always makes him entertaining. However, he is also a little bit of a pushover, so Greg constantly manipulates Rowley.

This series is also uniquely written as it is a collection of journals. You are inside the mind of Greg Heffley and you can hear his sarcasm and attitude in each situation. You get a narration of his life with all his thoughts and feelings intertwined into the story, and because he is just like most teens, his thoughts are often very dramatic, making it enjoyable to read.

If you couldn’t already tell, I loved this series. It captures the basics of teenage life, but it is also exaggerated for entertainment. Every small interaction, every thought, is humorous and overly dramatic so you never get bored. If you haven’t read this series, you should check it out! It might be embarrassing for a freshman to read a children's book, but if you never read it you’re missing out.
